January 2012
Dear Finney School,
I would like to introduce myself. My name is Sue Wilson and I am the “new nurse” at Finney. I have been here since September 2011 and trying to meet and get to know all the students and staff.
My husband and I live in Fairport. We have 2 daughters, 16 and 22. The oldest is a graduate student at University of Buffalo in Occupational Therapy while the younger is a junior at Fairport High School. I have been a nurse for almost 30 years and have a broad nursing background. However, my 5 years in the RCSD as a school nurse proved to me my love for school nursing and I am very happy to be here at Finney.
As we start the New Year, there are a few things I would like everyone to remember:
1) WASH YOUR HANDS - A recent study done in an urban school setting shows that students and staff need to wash and/or sanitize (alcohol based cleaner, ie: Purell) their hands 4 times a day to decrease disease transmission. Recommended on arrival, before and after lunch as well as prior to leaving school.
2) STAY HYDRATED – Any students that have been to visit to me have been told to … DRINK. Each one of us need to drink our 6-8 glasses (8 ounces each) of water per day. Bring your water bottle to school and refill throughout the day.
3) WALK CAREFULLY ON THE ICE – Falls are the #1 reason for accidents at this time of the year. Good footwear, paying attention to where you are going and SLOW down – all tips to decrease the risk of falls.
I will be performing screening on students during January/February. This will include vision (for older grades, younger ones have been completed) and hearing. If there are any concerns noted, letters will be sent home.
Please feel free to stop by and meet me. I am in the basement. Know that I am available for questions and always willing to chat. My goal is to help Finney have a safe and healthy 2012!
Sincerely,
Susan C. Wilson, RN
