Finney Students Selected To Play In All-State Ensembles

 October 2009

Each year, students across Monroe County and New York State participate in the Monroe County School Music Association (MCSMA) and New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) solo festivals, where they perform required scales, a solo of their choice, and sight read music they have never seen before. Their performances are evaluated and scored by a professional music educator. Based on these scores, each student may qualify to play in festival ensembles at the All-county, Area All-state, or New York State Conference levels.

Two of Finney’s 9th graders, Brooke Nance and Patrick Knight, scored so well they have been chosen to play in the Area All-State Ensembles. Brooke was selected to play French Horn in the All-State Orchestra and Patrick was selected to play saxophone in the All-State Concert Band. Congratulations to both Brooke and Patrick for their accomplishments!

Finney offers a comprehensive K-12 music program. General music is offered in grades K-8, with academic music classes offered at the high school level. Finney also offers elementary, middle school, and high school levels of instrumental and choral ensembles. High school students can participate in the worship team course. Students also have the option of taking private lessons with individual instructors throughout the school day as well as after school. The music curriculum is based on the New York State and National Music Standards. The entire K-12 program is overseen by Music Director Wes Nance, (Eastman School of Music ’90 and ’92, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra ’86-present). and implemented by the music teaching staff, Penny Kunkel, Ron Sykes II, Elizabeth Irvine, and Ben Proctor. Learn more about our music program and teachers at the The Charles Finney School Music Department website at
